Overview

A gripping political parable in which a respectable man willingly ignores the obvious danger posed by two arsonists living under his roof. Max Frisch's timeless classic explores denial, moral responsibility, and the consequences of refusing to confront growing threats.

When a wave of mysterious arson attacks spreads through the city, respectable businessman Gottlieb Biedermann loudly condemns the criminals. Yet when two suspicious strangers arrive at his own home, he welcomes them inside despite the obvious signs that they may be responsible for the fires.

Driven by politeness, fear of confrontation, and a desire to preserve his comfortable life, Biedermann gradually becomes an accomplice to his own destruction. Even as the visitors openly reveal their intentions, he continues to deny reality, convincing himself that everything will somehow work out.

Max Frisch's classic drama is a powerful political allegory about denial, conformity, and the willingness of ordinary people to ignore obvious dangers. Director Fritzi Wartenberg presents the play as a sharp, contemporary reflection on modern society, asking why destructive forces are allowed to flourish and how fear, convenience, and self-deception prevent people from acting before it is too late.

Combining a rich artistic tradition with innovative directing and one of Germany's finest acting ensembles, the Berliner Ensemble remains one of Europe's leading theatre institutions.

The Berliner Ensemble is one of the most prestigious and influential dramatic theatres in Europe. Founded in 1949 by legendary playwright and director Bertolt Brecht together with actress Helene Weigel, the theatre has played a defining role in the development of modern theatre and remains closely associated with Brecht's concept of Epic Theatre.

Since 1954, the company has been based in the historic Theater am Schiffbauerdamm, a magnificent Neo-Baroque theatre in central Berlin. Today, the Berliner Ensemble operates three performance venues—the Großes Haus, Neues Haus, and Werkraum—presenting a diverse repertoire ranging from Bertolt Brecht's masterpieces and Shakespearean classics to contemporary works by leading international playwrights.

Under the artistic direction of Oliver Reese, the theatre continues its tradition of combining classical drama with socially relevant contemporary productions.
