Overview

Celebrating one of the greatest songwriters of all time, through the unique voices of the artists she continues to inspire.

Following a revered debut at the Roundhouse in 2024, two sold out tours and widespread critical acclaim, The Cornish Bank are thrilled to bring Songs of Joni Mitchell to play the magical Minack Theatre in Cornwall this Autumn. Jesca Hoop & Lail Arad, acclaimed singer-songwriters in their own right, perform intimate interpretations of their favourite Joni Mitchell songs.

Originally conceived and curated by Lail Arad to mark Joni Mitchell’s 80th birthday, the show was described as “a perfect celebration of Joni Mitchell”, packed with “heartfelt and intricate performances”. They are joined by special guest performers at every port, each bringing something new to Joni's inexhaustible catalogue. Previous guests have included Kate Stables (This Is The Kit), Vashti Bunyan, Simon Armitage, Lisa Hannigan, Gail Ann Dorsey, Rachel Sermanni, Emeli Sandé and Sam Amidon.

“Their voices individually are just perfection. You could hear a pin drop. And then the three part harmonies when they sang together, were just exquisite.” Zoe Ball

Venue Info

The Minack Theatre - Cornwall
Location   Porthcurno, Penzance TR19 6JU

Perched dramatically on granite cliffs high above the turquoise waters of Porthcurno Bay in Cornwall, the Minack Theatre is one of the world's most extraordinary open-air performance venues. Carved into the rugged coastline overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, it offers a spectacular combination of theatre, architecture, and natural beauty that has captivated audiences for nearly a century.

The theatre was created through the vision and determination of Rowena Cade, who began building it in 1932 with the help of local craftsmen. What started as a simple stage for an amateur production of Shakespeare's The Tempest gradually evolved into an internationally renowned cultural landmark. Over several decades, Cade personally shaped much of the theatre by hand, constructing its granite terraces, stairways, and subtropical gardens that continue to define its unique character today.

With its stone seating rising above the stage and the Atlantic Ocean forming a breathtaking natural backdrop, the Minack Theatre creates an unforgettable setting for live performance. Productions are presented in the open air throughout the season, allowing audiences to experience theatre as the sun sets over the sea and the sound of the waves becomes part of the performance.

The Minack hosts a diverse artistic programme that includes Shakespearean drama, contemporary theatre, musicals, opera, dance, chamber music, folk performances, and family productions. Alongside professional companies from across the United Kingdom and abroad, it also welcomes emerging artists and community ensembles, making it one of Britain's most distinctive cultural venues.

Beyond its performances, the theatre itself is a major visitor attraction. Guests can explore its beautifully landscaped gardens, admire panoramic coastal views, and learn about its remarkable history through exhibitions dedicated to Rowena Cade's life and the theatre's development.
