Musical "The Sound of Music" at the Salzburg State Theatre

Nestled on the banks of the Salzach River and surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Austrian Alps, Salzburg is one of Europe's most beautiful and culturally significant cities. Famous as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the city combines magnificent Baroque architecture, a rich musical heritage, and spectacular Alpine scenery.

Salzburg's historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is filled with elegant squares, medieval streets, churches, and aristocratic palaces. The city's most recognizable landmark is the imposing Hohensalzburg Fortress, rising above the Old Town and offering panoramic views across the city and surrounding mountains.

Music is at the heart of Salzburg's identity. The city celebrates its most famous son through numerous museums, concert venues, and annual events, while the prestigious Salzburg Festival has established the city as one of the world's foremost destinations for opera, classical music, and theatre. Founded in 1920, the festival attracts leading singers, conductors, orchestras, and directors from around the world and has become synonymous with artistic excellence.

Salzburg's musical traditions extend far beyond Mozart. The city has a long history of sacred and court music, reflected in magnificent venues such as Salzburg Cathedral, the Mirabell Palace, and the historic Mozarteum. Today, these traditions coexist with contemporary cultural institutions, orchestras, chamber ensembles, and international festivals.

The city's architectural beauty is complemented by its extraordinary natural setting. The surrounding Alps provide opportunities for hiking, cycling, skiing, and excursions throughout the year, while nearby lakes and picturesque villages offer a peaceful contrast to the lively historic centre.

Salzburg is also closely associated with The Sound of Music, which was filmed at numerous locations around the city and its surroundings. Visitors can discover many of these locations while exploring Salzburg's historic streets, gardens, and Alpine landscapes.
