Overview

Music Director Daniel Hope and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra present a veritable showcase of the *concerto* genre in this festive concert marking the start of Advent.

It was Arcangelo Corelli who established the definitive form for the interplay between a small group of soloists and the full orchestra; with these *concerti grossi*, he secured his place in music history as one of the founding fathers of the Baroque instrumental concerto. The concluding *Pastorale* of his most famous *concerto grosso* bears the inscription "fatto per la notte di Natale"—written for Christmas Eve—and radiates a peaceful serenity through its swaying rhythm. A moment of pastoral contemplation also appears in the Concerto in D minor for two violins and cello from Antonio Vivaldi’s groundbreaking collection *L’Estro Armonico*, where a graceful *Siciliano* is nestled between the virtuosic musical dialogues of the outer movements. The work made such a profound impression on Johann Sebastian Bach that he even adapted it into an organ concerto. The evening concludes with a solo concerto by the Baroque master himself: the Violin Concerto in A minor, BWV 1041—one of the finest examples of the Italian concerto form brought to perfection.

Venue Info

Tonhalle Zürich - Zurich
Location   Claridenstrasse 7

The Tonhalle Zürich, having undergone a complete programme of renovation between 2017 and 2021, has now been restored to its former glory.

Built at the turn of the 20th century, the Tonhalle has seen many changes in the course of its history. Partially demolished, the building was extended with the addition of the Kongresshaus; much of its original ornamentation was removed; its colourful decoration was toned down and then restored. However, the two concert halls remained substantially unchanged – which is particularly fortunate, as the Grosse Tonhalle is acoustically one of the world’s finest concert venues.

The entire complex is now classified as a historical monument. Thanks to the Zurich electorate, which in 2016 voted by a large majority in favour of a complete renovation, the venue now meets today’s varying requirements both in the auditorium and behind the scenes – and has been restored to its former glory. Following the renovation programme lasting from 2017 to 2021, the Grosse Tonhalle’s old tonal brilliance has also returned.
