Programme
Overview

Nabucco, Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, La Traviata, Aida - The most beautiful scenes from Verdi's great operas.

Giuseppe Verdi wrote to his friend: “Copying the truth is perhaps a good thing, but inventing the truth is better, much better.”

All the characters portrayed in his operas reflect this image of truth, both then and now. Although we celebrated the 200th anniversary of the birth of this great composer in 2013, the emotions of his gigantic works, which continue to be portrayed so vividly today, still haunt us, as if we were with him in his time.

He was deeply committed to his country. As early as 1842, the chorus "Va pensiero" from the opera Nabucco became Italy's unofficial anthem.
In 1874, Giuseppe Verdi was appointed a Senator of Italy.

In his music, Giuseppe Verdi brilliantly portrays great love and tragedy in performances such as Violetta Valery from La traviata, Aida, and Rigoletto. His works exude great passion and lyricism, but also a joyful sense of humor and wit. All of this finds expression in this wonderful concert.

The program features the world's most popular and famous excerpts from his operas, such as La Traviata, Rigoletto, Aida, Il trovatore, Nabucco, Vespri siciliani, etc.

The world-famous arias, duets and ensembles, as well as the enchanting choirs with the famous Va pensiero from the opera Nabucco and the triumphal march from Aida, in harmony with the scenography, the fantastic costumes and the original choreography, form a whole in an unforgettable spectacle.

The GIUSEPPE VERDI GALA is a European production: the orchestra and choir of OPERA POLSKA – founded in 1989 by Maestro Marek Tracz in cooperation with Wroclaw Television – is composed of the best musicians and singers from the major opera houses in Poland and abroad.

What would the world of music be without the operas La Traviata and Aida? No Italian composer has left behind such a rich musical legacy as Giuseppe Verdi!

Venue Info

Tonhalle Zürich - Zurich
Location   Claridenstrasse 7

The Tonhalle Zürich, having undergone a complete programme of renovation between 2017 and 2021, has now been restored to its former glory.

Built at the turn of the 20th century, the Tonhalle has seen many changes in the course of its history. Partially demolished, the building was extended with the addition of the Kongresshaus; much of its original ornamentation was removed; its colourful decoration was toned down and then restored. However, the two concert halls remained substantially unchanged – which is particularly fortunate, as the Grosse Tonhalle is acoustically one of the world’s finest concert venues.

The entire complex is now classified as a historical monument. Thanks to the Zurich electorate, which in 2016 voted by a large majority in favour of a complete renovation, the venue now meets today’s varying requirements both in the auditorium and behind the scenes – and has been restored to its former glory. Following the renovation programme lasting from 2017 to 2021, the Grosse Tonhalle’s old tonal brilliance has also returned.
