The Edinburgh International Festival 2026 invites you into a world where music, opera, and ballet converge in one of Europe’s most inspiring cultural capitals. From 7 to 30 August 2026, the historic city of Edinburgh becomes a grand stage for artistic excellence, hosting 24 days and over 140 performances that bring together leading artists, orchestras, and companies from across the globe.
At the heart of the festival lies a compelling operatic programme, where tradition meets bold contemporary vision. The 2026 edition features both fully staged productions and concert performances, including the powerful new opera The Galloping Cure by Missy Mazzoli — a striking and modern work that reflects today’s social realities through an expressive musical language.
Alongside contemporary creations, the festival welcomes internationally acclaimed opera companies such as the Zurich Opera House, bringing refined interpretations of classic repertoire and enriching the programme with vocal excellence and theatrical depth.
The ballet and dance programme adds visual poetry and emotional intensity to the festival. A highlight of the season is the return of the San Francisco Ballet, presenting a bold and visually innovative production that explores new artistic forms while maintaining the elegance and discipline of classical ballet.
Through these performances, movement becomes storytelling — fluid, expressive, and deeply human.
Equally remarkable is the festival’s classical concert programme, which gathers some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras. The legendary Berliner Philharmoniker leads a series of symphonic highlights, joined by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and other distinguished ensembles.
A special artistic presence comes from Wynton Marsalis, whose large-scale opening concert sets the tone for the festival’s exploration of musical identity, alongside collaborations with leading soloists and orchestras.

The Edinburgh International Festival exists to bring world-leading artists together with audiences. For three weeks in August, Scotland’s capital becomes an unparalleled celebration of the performing arts and an annual meeting point for people of all nations. The International Festival presents a program featuring the finest performers and ensembles from the worlds of dance, opera, music, and theatre.
The Edinburgh International Festival was the inspired idea of Rudolf Bing, then the General Manager of Glyndebourne Opera, Henry Harvey Wood, the Head of the British Council in Scotland, and leaders from the City of Edinburgh. It was established in 1947 as a world-class cultural event to bring together audiences and artists from around the world, and over 70 years have gone from strength to strength.
The impact extends beyond the annual program: the community learning and engagement and professional development programs run throughout the year, reaching the widest possible audiences and contributing to the cultural and social life of Edinburgh and Scotland.
