Overview

The 2026 edition of the Colmar International Festival opens with its artistic director Alain Altinoglu leading his Orchestre symphonique de la Monnaie, returning to Colmar for two exceptional evenings of music.

The programme of this opening concert features Wagner’s famous Ride of the Valkyries — undoubtedly one of the most iconic and recognizable highlights of the entire Romantic opera repertoire.

The evening will continue with Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss, a profound and final masterpiece, and one of the most celebrated song cycles ever written.

The work will be performed by the exceptional South African soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha, winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2021 and recipient of the Herbert von Karajan Prize at the Salzburg Easter Festival in 2024. In 2026, she will appear in two productions at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden: Turandot, where she will perform the role of Liù, and The Marriage of Figaro, where she will sing the role of Countess Almaviva.

A remarkable artist whom the festival is delighted to welcome this summer!

The second half of the concert will present Also sprach Zarathustra — undoubtedly one of the most dazzling symphonic poems ever composed.
